A great friend of mine and I were chatting recently when he began to share a rather scary flying experience he had aboard a small plane with just him and his brother.
They had taken off in their small plane en route to Cape Town just like any other day, but suddenly……
Thick cloud cover made it impossible for them to continue with their journey and they were forced to turn around and head back as best they could to safer airspace.
As my friend recounted this scary incident, I noted the parallels that could be drawn from his experience to our own life journeys.
For one, all the hours of practice that these two guys had had in the air paid off – they were able to remain calm and put their skills to work because they had had adequate preparation and inner resources to pull from in what a time of potential crisis.
I thought to myself how often we in life hate the groundwork, the practices that seem to be so boring and pointless and yet it is those very times that allow us to both survive and thrive and so if you are wondering why you have to put in all those hard yards (at work, at life, in relationships etc.), remember that one day, when the rubber starts to hit the road, you will be thankful you did!
I also noticed how valuable having a TEAM (albeit 2 of you!) around you can be – the support they bring is invaluable to the challenges we face along the way. Team offers us perspective, which we often need to truly perceive what is going on around us. As they say, two pairs of eyes are always better than one! On their journey home, my friend could see the sea when at times his brother could not, which meant he could offer a perspective to the pilot that allowed him to keep their bearings and avoid any accidents.
When things got a little tense and tricky, just having someone there that believed in him was just what the pilot needed. At times in our life when the clouds get thick and we become unsure of our course, having someone who believes in you on the journey is also invaluable.
Thirdly, with his feet firmly planted on solid ground, my friend could take a few moments to feel relieved, to assess his ‘performance’ and to reflect on what he could have done differently during that trip. He was also able to look at life with fresh perspective and appreciate every moment!
Similarly, it is important that we all learn to reflect and change. This applies to all areas of our lives – from our work, to our relationships, to our play. What lessons did you learn from your Life Trip this week? Where can you change and improve going forward?
Lastly, never let the setbacks and challenges in life steal your Dream to fly in life – after you rest and refuel, fire up the engine and lift off once again! My friend could have chosen to walk away from that nerve-racking experience and never literally fly again. That would have been a shame…
Maybe you’ve run out of fuel, maybe you made a crash landing, maybe you ejected mid flight – whatever has happened has passed and it’s time to get back in and fly!
Did people laugh when you shared your Dream, did your friends tell you that you were mad to give up what you had for a “silly Dream”?
As a Motivational Speaker I connect with people all the time who have such massive Potential all lying dormant inside them- locked up and hidden from view because they have allowed the Fire Hoses around them to extinguish their fire…their Dream.
My friend, you were born for such a time as this! Find your wings today….
You were born to fly!

Do you ever feel like a windup toy, or a spinning top, that starts the day off with great gusto and energy, but then gradually loses all momentum, until you find yourself collapsing in a tired and irritable heap the moment you drag yourself through your front door?
I guess life can be like this some days. I have heard is said, however, that, if we spend our time doing what we love, we will never work another day in our lives.
Take an average Saturday as an example. If you, like many others, work a Saturday morning shift, you may feel quite exhausted at the end of a hard week until…drum roll please…you head for that Rugby or Football match, or that hair appointment, or evening out with your friends.
All of a sudden, the energy levels are up, there’s a bounce in your step and life is just peachy. Never mind that an hour ago (at work) you felt like death warmed up in a slow-cooker, you had a deep scowl on your brow and were ready to bite the head off anyone foolish enough to venture into your grumpy space (you know …YOUR space!)
Yes, it would seem that our emotions change quite easily and radically from one moment to the next.
It is like the old lady who feels sick and tired until she receives the news that she has won the Lotto – and is instantly transformed into an excited 16 year old with a walker!!!
Why is this so?
Something triggers our emotions to shoot up or crash down, right? Indeed so! I believe it is the thoughts we choose to dwell on that result in the emotions we settle for in our lives.
This being so, if you are tired of “feeling” down, “feeling” tired and “feeling” glum with Life – give yourself a solid, mental shake and begin to smell the coffee!
You have a choice to make today and it’s to “make your MIND up” about your day.
Have you ever had someone scream that at you? “Oh, just make up your mind why don’t you?!” Well, there’s some truth in it. Only YOU have control of your thought patterns, only you can direct the thoughts that reside in your head, only you can make your mind up about how you are going to feel in a day.
So- choose to choose your thoughts!
If you want to start experiencing the energy and happiness you did as a child, start taking Life less seriously and pursue what you LOVE to do. It all starts with the thoughts you think about you, your life and your Purpose.
What are you passionate about friend? What really gets you excited? What can you talk about for hours over a meal? Start thinking on those; chewing on those. Direct your thoughts to the things that spark your creativity, renew your energy and bring you hope.
In my book that is about to be published- Have a Life Attack – I offer more thorough guidance on how to embark on the process of discovering your Purpose and Passion. Consider giving it a read!
